A new museum dedicated to Charlie Chaplin has just opened in his former home, on the shores of Lake Geneva, Switzerland. After the London-born Chaplin was banned from re-entering the United States in 1952, he settled in Switzerland, near the town of Vevey.
Montreux is part of what's known as the Swiss Riviera, a glamorous and beautiful stretch of Lake Geneva. The city has a long association with music, beginning with the annual Montreux Jazz Festival that has benn going every summer for almost 50 years. The town is the subject of Deep Purple's epic song "Smoke on the Water" and is also the chosen home town of numerous music stars, including the late Freddy Mercury of Queen, memorialized in a statue in the waterfront.
