On the road: Montreux

Montreux is part of what's known as the Swiss Riviera, a glamorous and beautiful stretch of Lake Geneva. The city has a long association with music, beginning with the annual Montreux Jazz Festival that has benn going every summer for almost 50 years. The town is the subject of Deep Purple's epic song "Smoke on the Water" and is also the chosen home town of numerous music stars, including the late Freddy Mercury of Queen, memorialized in a statue in the waterfront.

On the road: Zermatt

Even on an overcast day, when the Matterhorn is shrouded in mist and the low cloud ceiling doesn't make it worthwhile to take a lift up to the higher elevations, even on a day like today it's possible to find something to do in Zermatt besides shop.

You can spend some time in Hinterdorf, the oldest section of Zermatt. This is the original cow village, with buildings from the 16th and 17th century, long before Zermatt became famous as the base for starting climbs of the Matterhorn.

Here you'll find a fountain, dedicated to local climbing guide Ulrich Inderbinen. Herr Inderbinen summited the Matterhorn 370 times, the last when he was 90. The fountain and plaque were dedicated to him on the occasion of his 100th birthday.

And you can take a walk to the Gorner Gorge, just about an hour round trip from the center of town. Not a place for the acrophobic, though. Note the section of the trail in the upper third if the picture.

On the road: Geneva

Geneva's most famous sight is a plume of water spraying over the lake known as the Jet d'Eau, which I think translates to 'broken fire hydrant', but it sounds better in French. That gives you some idea of the quality and quantity of sights in the city. Don't get me wrong, it looks like a lovely place to live, I just wouldn't recommend a visit.
